Abstract: THE ROLE OF FORENSIC ACCOUNTING IN FINANCIAL STATEMENT IRREGULARITIES
This study investigates the role of forensic accounting in addressing financial statement irregularities, aiming to understand its impact on detecting and preventing such irregularities, improving financial reporting accuracy, and supporting regulatory compliance. A survey research design was employed, involving 320 respondents from publicly traded companies in Lagos, derived using Taro Yamane's formula. The survey instrument's reliability coefficient score was 0.89. Findings reveal that forensic accounting plays a crucial role in detecting and preventing financial statement irregularities, significantly improves financial reporting accuracy, and supports regulatory compliance. The study recommends that companies integrate forensic accounting into their financial reporting processes and provide continuous training for their accounting teams on emerging financial fraud techniques.
